I've asked this problem on the dutch phpbb2 support forum and the guys there anwser me that this problem is caused by the host i'm on. That means madpage.com. I can't do anything about it but activating my own smtp adresses. Is this true ?

What's wrong with madpage.com ?

Greetings,

Yes this is true.
1. If you have a free ad or free no ad supported site, this problem may or maynot occur. SMTP is disabled.
2. You can either upgrade to a paid plan or you can locate different free SMTP servers throughout the internet to use. Also, your ISP may have a free one for you to use, might be a thought.

Hmm well my own isp does not have an open smtp server. (because they block spam so port 25 is disabled) i can't use that.

Do you know any good working open smtp servers ????

The reasons it happens is so many things in the core of phpBB require sending out emails. Like say you send a PM someone will ususally get an email saying they have a PM.

Greetings,

1. Ok. Another option for no ISP SMTP servers, search google (its your best friend).
2. If you dont find one, just disable SMTP and PM via your board totally. :D

I always had disabled SMTP and everything worked fine for about a month. Since 2 days ago i suddenly, out of the blue, got these errors. So disabling SMTP is no option. I have enabled SMTP now and I use an open smtp server now and everything works fine. But i do think it's strange why this problem suddenly occured ? Anyone has any information about that ?

I've vistited a lot of phpbb2 forums and the problem I had is a very very common problem, which a lot of people run into.

Exactly the same problem with the emailer.php and smtp.php. Not using SMTP issue and thus, everyhing was working fine a week ago during more than 4 months and I did not change anything neither my CP in your server host, nor my admin panel within pHpBB2.
After reading the phpBB2 communities, I recall again, that it is in fact a very widespread prob, not fixed yet.

However it seems that it could be a server misconfig or change in SQL, etc, cause it is NOT a phpBB2 soft prob. I have sent a note using the help mode, and still awaiting for a fix. None of the fixes published in the phpBB2 forums have worked so far. Hope you find a way to solve it.

I need to say that I have received assistance in less than 5 minutes several times, so for the time being your help is no less than outstanding. Hope you find a way to fix the strange behaviour.
Please do not try to guess, go to one of our sites and try there.
Best regards and good luck.
