Hello everyone,

I was thinking - why don't we make a website contest or something like that. People are submitting their website to this section anyway and others are giving feedback, why not choose the prettiest site of the month and reward the owner with 1 year free subscription to one of the paid hosting plan (Personal Pro for example).

What do you think? It is up to you, if you're interested I will arrange the contest. Vote please :)

*EDIT*

This is what we have until now. I will be editing the post if we decide to change something:

Website Contest Rules

1) General:
- the website must not violate the rules of the Site Showcase and Discussions forum, posted here: http://forum.100webspace.com/viewtopic.php?t=1125
- the website and the web hosting account where it is hosted must not violate 100webspace's ToS, published here: http://www.100webspace.com/terms.html - this includes the requirement of full and valid personal details (incl. valid phone number) provided with the account. Invalid personal details or any other violation of our ToS will get you disqualified and you will not be allowed to enter the contest ever again!
2) Web hosting accounts:
- you must have at least a Free hosting without banners plan to enter the contest;
- if you have ever violated our ToS, you are not allowed to enter the contest;
3) Websites:
- the website must be in English or at least have an English language section;
- you are allowed to enter the contest no matter whether your design is original or you have used a template designed by someone else;
- any websites violating someone's copyrights (design or content) will be disqualified and will not be allowed to enter the contest again;
- "Under Construction" sites are not allowed, your website must be fully developed and operational;
4) Cheating & Misc.:
- if we find that you are cheating, you will be disqualified
- we may not allow you to enter the contest or disqualify you at any time without having to explain the reasons if we decide that having your website taking part in the contest is damaging in any way 100webspace's business.

Criteria used when choosing the winner of the contest:

1) Content
- is the content original, is this website useful to its visitors' target group?
- is the content up-to-date?
- quality of language and content
2) Design
- is the design original?
- does the design suit the purpose of the website and the content?
3) Navigation
- how easy to navigate through is the website?
4) Name/Domain/Subdomain
- does the name of the website or its address suit the purpose of the site and it's content and design?
5) Clean code
- quality of scripting and coding
6) Popularity/success (the launch date of teh site will be taken in consideration of course)
- how popular is the site?
- how does it perform in search engines?

I agree, a free personal pro plan for the winner would be a great idea!

Only thing is, what if they already have one or have a higher package ?..We can reward them with more because then it would be unfair :roll:

How about a 1 year extension of your current paid plan or a 1 year upgrade to a paid plan if your currently on a free one after your current plan expires.

Who will be the judges? Can we all vote or will the moderators be the judges?

And what will it be judged on if the moderators judge the sites? =o

We need to make judging guidelines or something..

And I dont think free plans should be included, not including them will encourage people to upgrade.

Yes categories would be a good idea, here are some I think we shoudl have:
Personal / Blog Sites
Computer Information / Services
Gaming
Misc.

and whatever else we can come up with :)

Also, maybe have different contests (Most Unique, Most Attractive, etc.)

I am happy to see that there is interest :)

I was thinking of the following - we would have 4 categories of each paid plan + the Free hosting without banners one:
1) Free hosting without banners;
2) Personal plan;
3) Personal Pro plan;
4) Business plan;
The Gold and Platinum plans are about to be removed very soon so there will be no category for these two plans.

The jury would include the support team, the moderators team + a few experienced users on the forum (I will invite all of them personally via PM). As to the criteria that it will be judged on:
- quality content (depending on the topic of the web site of course);
- quality of design;
- quality of coding/scripting;
What do you think?

Nice, I like and maybe even have a category for most valid coding (Ran through the W3C code validator) and maybe even code organization (Like staying consistent with case [Not having <tR></TR>, etc.)

When I mention the coding, I was thinking more of the aspect of validation. I don't think that we should get into too much details.

As to poplarity/SEO etc. what should we do about new sites?

Allowing sites based on open source scripts and templates will certainly make more people take part in the contest, so I don't think that we should restrict them. A site well organized with a nice template and content based on an open source CMS and using a free template may as well be much better than a self-designed ugly site with pure content. So let's not leave them out.

I am adding the success/popularity to the criteria though, that's for sure.

Don't get me wrong, custom design would definitely give you more credit even if it isn't as good as a downloaded template, after all templates are usually designed by professionals and the used by newbies and we would like to reward creativity. I just meant that we would also allow sites that aren't self-coded/self-designed. Creativity may be found in the content too, so why not give people a chance even if they are using a template?

After all the jury will have several critera to judge upon.

There must be no missing pages. Sites that have the "Under construction" or "This is the future site of blah blah" sign are not allowed. Not that we couldn't accept them and simply rate them poorly, but I think that we should encourage people to fully develop their websites before submitting them for the contest.

Greetings,

Oliver - Are Support Staff and Moderators allowed to participate in the Contest? If so, I may enter if I get the new XPCS website template / forum template done in time! :D

Moderators and support members would be allowed to participate as well, but if you do, you won't be part of the jury.

What if ...
If we enter our own websites to the contest, and we are moderators / support team members, we should be able to still be a part of our jury, but we can not say or judge anything about our own websites. What about that??

Hmm, I don't think so. If a moderator or a support team member wants to enter the contest, he won't be allowed in the jury, I am sorry.

I am thinking, first week of April, maybe. We will be accepting submissions for about a month, then another week for the jury to decide who's the winner.

I think the Free hosting with banners there should also be a competition for. Maybe the prize could be free hosting without banners or something small. That way all customers have a chance of winning something

Nah, free hosting without banners shouldn't be alowed in. We need something to encourage them to upgrade, otherwise we would make no money at all. Everyone would just wait until they won the competition.

Oh, and reallyfunny..I noticed your site was free hosting with banners. :wink:
