Post subject:  mouse moves by itself

This may be in the wrong forum. I don't know where else to ask this. Please let me know where to post this.

My mouse moves by "itself" across my screen. Not always and don't remember what sites I was on when it happened.

I have win xp with auto updates and install them.
I have Mcafee Security Center with updates and install those. It also scans my computer and incoming emails.
I have spybot search and destroy and do the same for it.
None of the above detect anything bad except spybot finds cookies and adware.

A friend mentioned this could be a worm, virus, trojen etc.
Any idea why it happens and what to do?

Thanks, Robinston

Does it only happen in your web browser or perhaps in other applications?

I don't know exactly how much it moves so this is only a guess - the optical mouse sometimes has a problem reading course surfaces and then the cursor moves seemingly of its own accord.

The only other thing I can think of is one of those "Remote Assistance" programs (RealVNC is one of them) where an administrator remotely takes over operation of your PC but that usually requires permission from you.

Troubleshooting time: Does it happen with other rodents as well? Just plug another one in and see if it still happens.

The fact that it only happens in the web browser means it's most probably software related but it wouldn't hurt to check the hardware first.

Have you tried different browsers? If so, does it happen in all of them or just in one?

There's an option (I think it's windows based) where the mouse pointer snaps to the active button on a page but I doubt this would be your problem.

I had this happen to me also years ago when i was using windows. It only happened on one site and if I remember correctly I googled it and turned out to be a weird JavaScript thingie.

I'll look it up again and report back if I find anything.
