Is there a way to set up an option for me to receive an email anytime there's a new post in the annoucements forum? I don't check here regularly but it would be very convenient to have the notice of any downtime or other issues.

Also just curious if phpbb has that capability at all

No dont think so, you can just recieve notifications of replys on topics which you have posted on by changing the settings in your profile.

Well I love how I was told to check the forum for announcements, then there is an announcement to backup my database for yet more downtime and then it gets brought down early before there is time to even see the warning. Gee thanks.

I understand where you are coming from, that the announcements should be made at least 1 day before the downtime. However the downtime may have been un-expected. I will follow this up with an admin.

:edit: Unfortunately there is nothing they can do, they cannot send out emails because then they will only get people complaining of spam. The announcement was posted 1 day before the downtime, and good news - no more scheduled downtime.

Quote from an admin: "When hardware breaks we schedule the replacement for as soon as posible, which usually means less than 24 hours."

So you can see the troubles that they face, and hopefully you understand why they couldn't get the warning across to everyone. Their main aim is to get the server up and running as soon as possible, without any disruptions.
