IN da bginnin God cre8d da heavens & da earth. Da earth waz barren, wit no 4m of life.

And so begins the Bible, according to the world's first mobile phone text version of the world's most famous book.

The Bible Society in Australia has just released what it says is the first version of the SMS Bible - a translation of 30,173 verses into text. Society executive director Michael Chant said it was a way of making the Bible relevant in modern society.

"People who go to church use mobile phones and watch television and do modern things," Mr Chant said. "The church needs to relate to people in that way. The old days when the Bible was only available within a sombre black cover with a cross on it are long gone."

Despite the words being delivered in a new format, he said the message had not changed.

"We're not selling a product, it's the message that Jesus is still relevant today," Mr Chant said. "It's just being communicated in another method."

The son of a society employee in NSW raised the idea of producing the world's first SMS Bible several months ago. It took the society only four weeks to translate hundreds of thousands of words into SMS format, using a "replace text" feature on a computer Word document version of the Bible.

While the spelling of the words has changed, the messages remain faithful to the grammar used in the Contemporary English Version of the Bible.

Bible verses can be downloaded from an internet site at no cost, with senders charged standard SMS costs for sending messages via their own carrier. Messages generally cost about 25c.

If a person were to send each verse of the Bible to a friend, it would cost close to $8000.

The launch of the SMS Bible coincided with the end of the "Jesus. It's all about life" campaign, piloted in South Australia.
