Phpbb2 is a nice forum and all that, but all those mods can be confusing to a beginner. All those slight little code changes, and one mistake ... oof! Curious, I tried another board service mentioned here, UNB (Unclassified News Board). It looked a lot more simpler, with a lot fewer alterations. And the poster did say it was really easy. That sounded good to me!

FTPing it was a cinch. And I do remember how to set up the database, I think. I've done it for a few services already with no problem. But either cogia.net is sick today, or I am missing something very, very obvious.

The requirements to install are the usual ones:

Server: cogia.net
Username: My username
Password: My password
Database name: database_database
Table name prefix: I left it the way the service had it.

But I still get UNB Error: Cannot connect to database.

What very, very obvious thing am I not doing? Thanks.

If no one else can figure it out, I can always re-install the phpBB2 board, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I can't figure it out. But now, I am curious.

Just to see that it wasn't that forum, I also downloaded Simple Machines. I plan to use one and get rid of the other.

This is the message I got from Simple Machines upon trying to install this:

Access denied for user: 'XXXXXXXX@cogia.net' (Using password: YES)

I know I'm using the right password. I can get into the SQL database with no trouble. So what am I screwing up?

Thanks for your help.

In your configuration, are you entering www.server.com? If so, drop the www and just make it server.com.

Thanks for all the help. It turned out that I messed up the username. I THOUGHT I did something obviously wrong. :oops: Thanks for putting up with me!

But now I have a strange problem. I decided to use Simple Machines, and got this error now:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: db_error() in /home/www/mysite.cogia.net/smf_1-0-5_install[1]/Sources/Subs.php on line 234

What is THIS now??? I'll see if I can't find out what is on that line, in the meantime. A slight disadvantage to the free service is that you can't view your code on numbered lines.

Hmmm ... this may be a job for the support board over there. This is a section containing the offending code:

232 $ret = mysql_query($db_string, $db_connection);
233 if ($ret === false)
234 $ret = db_error($db_string, $file, $line);
235
236 // Debugging.

I'm not quite sure what is up with that.

If you haven't fixed this yet, it is a simple error.

Quote:
233 if ($ret === false)

the third "=" should be removed...in php to compare 2 variables you use a==b.

That sounds so simple, it's amazing!

I did download that other board, but now, I'm curious to try that fix. I may try downloading the other board again, just to see what happens. Thanks for the info!
