Post subject:  cookie settings

Hi there,

I run a forum with phpbb2 2.0.15
My browser accepts cookies.

The settings in my acp are

domainname: www.example.nl

port 80

scriptpath /

cookie domain: www.example.nl
cookiename: phpbb2mysqlns
cookie pathd /
cookie secure off

session length 7200 seconds

Problem i get now is that users of my forum complain that they get logged out of my forum after a couple of minutes without them wanting to and ofcourse without them loggin out themself.

Can anyone tell me why this happens and what i can do about it ?

Is it because they have the wrong settings for cookies in their internet explorer ???

Greetings,

Try changing the session length back to the phpBB Default. I believe its either 3200 or 3600 . :D

yeah tried that too... but 7200 should be 2 hours session length and 3600 1 hour.... so ehh !?!? they should not be logged out that soon.... right ?

I've put it back to default (3600 secs) and I now leave cookie domain empty..... hope it works....

i also read that it has something to do with cookie security settings which internet explorer (like anything else from microsoft) does not fully support.

in sessions.php this sentence should be added:

header('P3P: CP="NOI ADM DEV PSAi COM NAV OUR OTRo STP IND DEM"');

before

setcookie($cookiename . '_data', '', $current_time - 31536000, $cookiepath, $cookiedomain, $cookiesecure);
setcookie($cookiename . '_sid', '', $current_time - 31536000, $cookiepath, $cookiedomain, $cookiesecure);

and this has to be repeated 3 times in the sessions.php file.

If it works? dunno yet...

anyone any further ideas ?

Get a little software package I have that resets all cookie information to get it to work. Come over to www.thetechbase.com, PM me or request it in the phpBB Related and I will post the link :D

Cipher, i installed and run the cookie reset program. But i does not make any difference. If i understand correctly, that program does nothing else then restore the original settings for your host and forum, is that right ?

The problem unfortunately still exists :cry:

Helpppppppp!

I read so many different solutions on forums world wide but none work. On phpbb.com they say you must put .example.nl as cookie domain name instead of example.nl others say you have to leave it empty. It simply doesn't matter what i put in there... :cry:

Greetings,

Yes thats all the program does. I thought it would help, and you can either .example.com or leave it blank or put exampl.com ... I have never ran into this problem like this before and I am not 100% sure what is causing it.

Tell your users to reset there cache and delete the temp files. Maybe that might work so that then they will get a new cookie. :D

Hi,

Yeah i'll give that a shot...

In the mean time i ofcourse am trying to find a solution reading on a lot of forums. I am not the only one but i haven't find a good solution yet.

The thing that worries me is that i never see the cookie stored on the host. I presume phpbb2 writes the cookie which is named in the acp in the folder which i told it to in the acp.

So am i wrong or must i see a cookie on the host now and then ?

This never happens... when i ftp to my host i never see the cookie name i defined in the acp.

Makes me wonder if either something is wrong with the phpbb2 software or that the host causes the problem ?!?! But can the host prevent phpbb2 writing a cookie ????

Greetings,

phpBB2 auto writes the cookie. You will not see it on the host. And no, the host can not prevent phpBB from writing a cookie :D

hmmmzzz... that means that the problem is caused through something else.... but what ? mmmm.... i'm out of ideas.... :cry:

At this moment i'll have to wait for the users of my forum to find out if they still have the log off problem....

The thing i just tested, which still does not work, is if i want to automaticly login again when i visit my forum.

It does not work, never has done. It must have something to do with microsux internet explorer cookie settings then... da** i really tried everything... allowing cookies, allowing cookies from my domain name.... It just don't work....

I'm gonna start with linux again... hi
